Speed Humps: Creating Safe Spaces

A speed hump is a type of traffic control device used in car parks.

A speed hump (also called a road hump, or undulation, and speed ramp) is a rounded traffic calming device used to reduce vehicle speed and thus sound volume on residential streets. Humps are placed across the road to slow traffic and are often installed in a series of several humps to prevent cars from speeding before and after the hump. Common speed hump shapes are parabolic, circular, and sinusoidal.

Speed humps have a raised surface that is spread across the road on its entire width or sometimes up to a few metres. The purpose of using this tool is to slow down the motor-vehicle driver, cyclist, and bicyclist in a pedestrian zone, work zone, or slow zone.

Drivers may experience a ‘speed bump’ when they accelerate.

Driving slowly over the speed bumps allows the vehicle’s tyres to roll just fine without additional problems. Different things may happen when you drive much faster. Since your vehicle will take the speed bump harder, the tyres might push out as it takes the vehicle’s overall weight that’s coming down to the other side of the speed bump.

Drivers who tend to dash over speed bumps may cause severe damage to their vehicles. It doesn’t only happen to drivers; even a cyclist may be exposed to this problem. Put this in mind, when you’re going over a speed bump at such a high-speed rate, it’s like hitting every part of your vehicle with a hammer.

Speed humps can reduce the amount of time it takes to leave a car park.

Speed humps will not only create a sense of safety among people living in your neighbourhood, but they will also significantly reduce the number of road accidents and associated deaths. Make the most of this tool by using other road safety devices around it.

Studies from all over the world have shown that speed humps are an effective way to reduce speed. Speed is often the primary determining factor in the severity of any vehicular collision. If a car is travelling faster the consequences of a road traffic accident will be far worse for another vehicle or a pedestrian.
