The 6 Step Guide on training your dog to use a Pet Ramp

At Traffic Safety Systems we don’t just care about people’s safety, we care about your pet’s safety too.

Our furry friends sometimes need a helping hand when they get a little older or are recovering from an injury. Our Pet Ramp (PR1575-A) is designed to assist your dog accessing areas that they would normally need to jump up on or jump in to. Generally used as a portable car ramp, it will provide a safe way for your dog to enter and exit your car.

It is a simple to use, extendable ramp that slides together for ease of carrying and compact storage. The tough rubber surface allows all four paws to grip the ramp without slipping. The non-slip feet at both ends of the ramp rest securely on most flat surfaces.

(We also have Pet Stairs (PS630-P) available for the little pooches with short legs!)

THE 6 STEPS:

Step 1: DESENSITISE

The first step is to introduce the ramp as a positive addition to your dog’s life. Ways to do this are placing their food bowl on the ramp at mealtimes. Scatter treats around the ramp, so they must navigate over it and around it for the reward. Play with their toys on and around the ramp. Use lots of praise if they ignore the ramp but avoid trying to comfort them if they are apprehensive. Only the desired behaviour should always be rewarded.

Step 2: STAND

Extend the ramp flat on the ground. Have them stand on the ramp. Allow them to feel the texture and react to any slight movement from their body weight on the ramp. Once they are calmly standing on the ramp and not reacting to it – praise and reward.

Step 3: SIT

Have them sit on the ramp. Ideally at a slight height so they start getting used to the idea of being off the ground. Again, once calm, and completely ignoring the ramp – praise and reward.

Step 4: WALK FLAT

This step can start with the extended ramp flat on the ground and then progress to a low height. The result should be that the dog is comfortable walking on the ramp, and associates that the goal is to walk from one end of the ramp to the other.

Step 5: WALK UP THE RAMP

This can require a lot of practice and a lot of patience! Changing from flat to an angle can be challenging for some dogs. Using a leash may be of assistance for this step. Only slight pressure should be applied and, rather than dragging your dog up the ramp, use the leash to gently lift the dog’s head and encourage them to take a step forward. Treats and praise can be used to create a positive environment. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat!

Step 6: WALK DOWN THE RAMP

Learning to descend the ramp is by far the biggest challenge for most dogs. Start with low angles and work your way up to the height required to access your car. Use their leash and treats in the same manner as Step 5 and try to avoid your dog to jumping off the side of the ramp. The desired outcome is for them to associate using the whole length of the ramp as the desired outcome. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat!

There is no time frame to mastering the ramp. Some dogs may take only a few days to be comfortable with all 6 steps, while others may need a few weeks. Repetition and patience are the keys to success. Keep sessions short and sharp and fun! A maximum of 15 minutes a few times a day should be all it takes to get your favourite furry pal walking up and down the ramp like a superstar!
