Speed Hump Safety in Car Parks

A speed hump in a car park is the most effective way to control speed and keep everyone safe. Designed to deter drivers from breaking the speed limit by providing intermittent physical reminders to slow down and observe speed limits. In conjunction with clear signage and direction, both drivers and pedestrians can stay out of harm’s way!

Speed humps in car parks

Speed humps can be extremely effective – a set of two, or three, speed humps in your car park can slow down drivers entering and exiting, making them take more care to avoid hitting pedestrians or other vehicles. The problem is that speed humps can also pose problems. If they aren’t designed correctly, or not located at correct key points throughout your car park, they may be more hindrance than a help. It is best to consult a professional before installing speed humps into your business’s car park.

How are speed humps measured?

Speed humps, bumps or cushions are designed to provide a small but uncomfortable speed-reduction effect when driving over them. How they do that is measured by their rise—the difference between their highest and lowest points—and length—the distance between high and low points. They can also be measured in terms of their width, although not all speed bumps have a significant width. The rise is typically 15cm (6 inches) on residential streets, while it may range from 25–30cm (10-12 inches) on busier roads.

Speed humps save lives and reduce accidents

Speed humps are also known as traffic calming devices, and they serve a simple but very important purpose: saving lives. Speed humps are small, flat bumps that you can find throughout any car park, near a pedestrian crossing, or even at road junctions. While they may seem harsh when you have to drive over them in your car, speed humps reduce accidents and save lives – especially for children and people with disabilities who might be slower on their feet. For example, an accident involving a vehicle and a wheelchair can prove fatal if speed humps are not present.
